J. F. Bell Funeral Home Database Since 1917 the J.F. Bell Funeral Home has served the community of central Virginia. When members of the community and of local families want to learn about people and places of the community’s past, the Bell family helps them. In the summer of 2001, the Bell family decided to collaborate with the local African-American Genealogy Group to make it easier to provide information about earlier generations. As part of the effort records of the people buried by the Bell Funeral Home before 1970 were located, reorganized, and the burial information compiled into an electronic database.
Obituary Notices from the Alexandria Gazette, 1784-1915. Rev. ed. Early death notices from the Gazette are, for the most part, quite terse. One or two lines in length, they may recite the deceased’s name, age, place of residence, death date, and, occasionally, the place of birth. Since notices were printed only when paid for, these early obituaries were often those of prominent planters, merchants, or political leaders of the community; rarely is a carpenter, bricklayer, or tradesmen mentioned. With the advent of the Jacksonian revolution in the US, however, reporting of obituaries became more egalitarian. Denizens of the Victorian era penned obituaries and eulogies that were effusive and sentimental in mood. By the latter half of the 19th century, biographical sketches of the deceased often included such items of interest as occupation, family members, church affiliation, and the site of interment. This index to the obituaries found in the Gazette for the years 1754 to 1915 gives the names of the deceased, date of death, and the page number where the obituary may be found in the paper.
